    • Aaron Benek - Our Friend Has Passed

SailorTweek FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold RTX Head Guardian

My convention family got a little smaller.

There is one less mischievous smile in our ranks.

Aaron Benek passed away recently. I can't type out the proper words to express how...well...how fucking shitty this is. I want to be poetic, but I'm sad and angry and have just lost a friend.

He leaves behind a wife, 3 boys, and a soon-to-be-born baby girl.

Aaron was smart and hilarious. He was one of the calmest and cool-headed convention workers I've ever met. We are talking @plaidlad levels of calm! Aaron was an absolute joy to work with. He was one of our RTX Satellite Leads and a staple in Panels leadership at Emerald City Comic Con.

There will be a celebration of Aaron's life held Thursday Aug 10

      13009 Dessau Road in Austin
      6:00pm

In lieu of flowers, there is a donation page for the family: Aaron Benek Legacy Fund

I want to go on for pages...but I'm still processing all of this so we'll end this post quickly.

Next time any of you decide to partake in Guinness with shots of Irish Cream and whiskey, think of our friend Aaron.

Here's to you, Benek. You were charming and terrific and...hey...

      *Incoming private joke*

At least you got to ride in a Tesla.

    • SKHS Class of 1997

SailorTweek FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold RTX Head Guardian

I graduated from South Kitsap High School 20 years ago this Summer.

Good God, Lemon... Our reunion was Saturday. I did not attend because the Emerald City/ReedPop annual camp out was over the weekend. I don't regret my choice, but I did not simply blow off the idea of going to the reunion. I would have gone if the camp out was on a different weekend...and the MST3K Live Seattle performance was another night...the reunion would have been my third choice. I know that this makes it sound like I have a busy social life, but I can honestly say that this was just a freak circumstance.

There is an active Facebook page for our class full of conversation topics, photos, and people expressing their apologies for not being able to attend the festivities. Topics of conversation range from "How many kids do you have?" to "Occupation?" to "Where on the high school hierarchy did you place yourself?"

What a hell of a question. I thought about it, but didn't reply. Where was I in the cliques and groups? I honestly have no idea. I spent most of time in the theater and photography labs. I was (am) an artist, builder, creator, team player, and a "good kid". I was only kicked out of class for sneezing and got detention for being late to a class (cause of lateness: I started my period and had to take care of that - got detention because I didn't have a doctors note for being late. Yeaaaaa...) I did not actively seek out to become accepted into a labeled group. I just existed. I had fun. I had friends that did a little of everything. I liked high school.

I read some of the responses to the Facebook conversation. To my surprise, a large amount of the people that would have been labeled as popular" or part of a clique typed out "I was invisible." or "I felt alone" or "I never fit in anywhere"

"Holy shit" Mary exhaled in surprise. No. Really.

High school cliques have existed for decades. We were so used to seeing these groups glorified and vilified in most of the media we consumed growing up. No one talked about anxiety or depression or abuse. We all just assumed that we would fall into the appropriate groups OR we had to "work hard" to be accepted into certain groups ... and somehow being in these cliques (that held no financial or educational benefit) would result in fame, riches, and success in the eyes of society. Pretty lofty bullshit for a city of 7,000 (at the time).

As my fellow classmates of 1997 reflect on their time in high school, we find out that the majority of the group felt invisible...unimportant..alone...

If I knew then what I know now, I would have had the know-how to reach out to my classmates and befriend folks who needed it. There should be no competition...we were all in this together.

I encourage you all to understand that these groups - jocks and geeks and theater nerd and band nerds and eggheads and so on - don't matter. How we treat each other matters. How we help each other matters. We can turn to our groups for specific interests, but being a theater geek should never have meant "anit-jock" and vice versa. These cliques were/are treated as binary polar opposites...like political parties. Let's break that cycle of bullshit. Having different skills doesn't make you any better than another group. Now that my "generation" are ...ugh...ADULTS, we have the power to squash the notion of "This clique is more valuable because of athletics - intelligence - popularity - social value and therefore important to force yourself into".

We're all in this together...we have all been in this together since the beginning.

    • The memory of taste

SailorTweek FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold RTX Head Guardian

I'm up a little too late drinking coca cola and Malibu rum...this feels so familiar.

When I was in college, I drank a lot of coke with a rum called Redrum. It came in a coffin-shaped red glass bottle and tasted like a Frankie Avalon & Annettee Funicello movie:super fruity and coconut-ty. I didn't get sloshed on this stuff...but I drank it when I could afford it.

I would pour it on nights when I hogged the phonelines to chat with my friends online. I would drink it when I'd watch Tenchi Muyo and Ranma 1/2 on VHS. I would drink it while I played video games.

I lived a white rental house with 5 other Western WA University theater students. We called the house CAMELOT because it was "a silly place". We had Halloween parties in the Spring. We helped each other with lines and projects. We comforted each other when we didn't get parts.

And then rent went up and our out-of-touch landlord just gave up on us. We all had to move by Summer quarter and find...ugh...apartments. Houses were no longer something 6 college students together could afford on student loans and shitty fast food jobs.

I was the last to leave Camelot. I remained there for a moth after everyone left. I tried to pack up all of my shit and tie up all of the loose ends. I spent most of that last month missing my friends, smoking clove cigarettes, blasting Soundgarden, drinking Redrum and coke, and playing on my old Super Nintendo. It was the end of an era...and era I squandered...didn't know what networking was...did the whole "I'm gonna be bitchy like the other popular kids in the department so I can fit in" thing, and wasted money because I thought retail therapy was cheaper than actual therapy.

      Spoiler alert: It's not.

After Camelot, my college life fell apart like a Michael Bay film. I was in an abusive relationship that kept me away from auditions, social functions, and better jobs. I lived in clutter. I didn't take care of myself. I could only land the shittiest of jobs. College was terrible and political and everyone did drugs and had sex with the department faculty...I had me and my cat and an empty stomach. I've nothing to show for the time between Fall 2001 and Spring of 2006 except for a bachelor of arts degree that can't get me a job and a box of my cat's ashes.

Oh, and my favorite Lilo and Stitch coffee mug.

But this drink...this coke and Malibu that I'm drinking...and sitting in front of my computer...and instead of typing on Livejournal, I'm typing on my beloved RT journal...brings me back to when I loved college and was surrounded by some of the funniest, talented, and inspiring people ever. The memory of this flavor is intense. It tastes like friendship, the creative spirit, and regret.

    • Apron of Blue

SailorTweek FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold RTX Head Guardian

Wanna hear a First World Problem? Blue Apron is yummy, but the complete opposite of "convenient"

We subscribed to Blue Apron a few months ago. Lots of folks spoke of the deliciousness and convenience of the service, so we decided to give it a shot. Now, I don't care about "convenience" other than not having to go to the store. I hate impulse buying and magazine covers and pushy sales teams and people on a Sunday who block every aisle with their long-ass decision-making deficiencies manifesting under the banner of "DO I GET THE BRANDED SUGAR-COATED SHIT OR THE BAGGED/GENERIC SUGAR-COATED SHIT?" I know that BA defines "convenience" as far as cooking time and delivery is concerned, but I have found that the service falls short of actually being convenient for our household.

      My gripes:

The meat portions are pretty nice. We don't need giant pieces of meat for dinner, but we do like our veggies...and Blue Apron's idea of a serving of veggies is about half the size of a small side salad. That is the saddest thing in the world. 1 veggie and you don't give me enough to feed a rabbit (let alone 2 grown-ass people)? We get 2 meals that are supposed to feed a family of 4 each time, but the veggie portions are pretty much "4 people? Ok...here's 2 potatoes. Have at it". Last week, the recipe called for a salad that was...wait for it...a cucumber and red leaf lettuce with olive oil...salt and pepper to taste...WHAT THE HELL KIND OF SALAD IS THAT?

Blue Apron also boasts convenience in the form of prep & cooing times and the fact that they send you EVERYTHING pre-portioned and ready to go. I love the pre-portioned part, but those prep & cook times are a load of shit. On the average, it takes me 90 minutes to make a Blue Apron meal. Much of the cooking is to be done at the same time - While cooking the meat, the veggies should be boiling and the oven should be preheating for the meager handful of cauliflower you are about to bake to a crisp and you should be chopping garlic like it owes you money. I can't multitask like that...I've lost too many pans to oil burns and our smoke alarms are not patient at all for that kind of malarkey. So, I prep everything first and decide what needs the most attention for cooking. I have a system, but it means that it takes me twice as long.

Speaking of oil burns, every meat dish sent to you is supposed to be pan cooked in olive oil. For those of you playing the home version of this game, that means FRIED. Ok, not fried to a crisp and not every meal is batter-fried, but I've already gone through a Costco-sized bottle of this stuff. This is an ingredient that BA does not include. I guess it's because the recipes will often suggest olive oil as extra seasoning like salt and pepper (which is also NOT included in the meal boxes)

But olive oil is messy when you cook with it. You have to watch it carefully or else you will pretty much burn your house down. Olive oil (any cooking oil in general) gets EVERYWHERE - on the counter tops, on your clothes, leaves a light film on the microwave above the stove, splatters on the floor - It's the glitter of the cooking world...it splatters all over the place making clean-up THE MOST INCONVENIENT THING IN THE FUCKING WORLD.

Everything is wrapped in plastic (with a few exceptions). The meat can be in plastic. Fine. Cross contamination and all that. However, we don't need the potatoes put in a sealed plastic bag or the pinch of allspice in a plastic bag or the leeks in a plastic bag. The amount of plastic waste generated by a BA meal is concerning. Now, BA encourages you to clean and send back all of the packaging for them to recycle. That's pretty awesome, but there is still no need to wrap everything in plastic. Before you recycle, you should be conserving and rethinking how to wrap the ingredients. Between the food wrapped in plastic, the insulated shipping bag, and the bags of biodegradable gel ice (we kept some of these for camping)...the amount of garbage is stupid.

So, I have a love/hate relationship with Blue Apron. We are thinking of giving the service a rest for a while. I want to go back to my 30 minutes meals that only require a few dishes and not every pan and portion bowl in the god damn house.

      PROS of Blue Apron:

The mixing ingredients are nicely portioned and aids in making new recipes fun! You don't have to go out an buy a bottle of vinegar because it will be included if the recipe calls for it.

Proper meat portions (according to my nutritionist and we really dig the sizes...not too big to make you feel stuffed and plenty of leftovers)

The recipes are awesome, easy to cook for the first time, and really easy to replicate on your own.

The service has me cooking things I never thought I would cook and I'm keeping most of these recipes to make again!

Bonus recipes for things like cast iron corn bread and hollandaise sauce

      CONS of Blue Apron:

Can a bitch get some veggies, please?

      Everything is wrapped in plastic.

You may ship the packaging back to BA for recycling, but you cannot recycle most of the packaging locally

BA's satanic pact with olive oil

Prep & cooking times are a god damn lie.

My kitchen looks as though I made Thanksgiving for 12...when I only really made glazed salmon for 2. Clean-up after the meal takes longer than washing my 3 bathrooms and vacuuming.

Between meal prep, cooking, and clean-up - the average BA meal for our household takes 2.5 hours.

      MIDDLE of Blue Apron:

You can add veggies if you have them on hand

I TRUST the recipe and follow it to the letter...except with garlic. 2 cloves of garlic totally equals 5  barbara

Meals will be hit-or-miss. We've been lucky to enough to enjoy 95% of what has been sent to us.

Both cats love the shipping boxes

Hey Mary, I had a random thought about the shirt sizes that we put on our guardian application. I don't remember if I put M or L, (I need it to be Medium) but if I put Large by mistake, is it a big deal to ask for a different size once they are given to us? Thanks a lot (for everything! :)

Hi Mary! I was going back through my old comments tab and found a post from you 3 years ago. I realized that was before RTX 2012 and well before we met and knew each other. Funny how things work out over time! smiley0.gif

  • Questions answered by SailorTweek

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to reach out to me. :)

No. Only autograph ticket holders may enter the Aurograph area.

According to our FAQ document, those times will be announced when we get the show schedule. Also, those times will vary depending on what team you are on. :)

Please privately message me here on RT or send me an email about this matter. Thanks.

I've been AFK for the 3 day weekend. Will be answering emails and messages tomorrow. Please be patient. :)

    Totally fair question!

As far as we (@sirNARVY and I) are concerned, everyone has to start somewhere. We accept applicants a good mix of applicants who have and have not been to RTX, have and have not worked conventions, and so on. Not having experience is not necessarily detrimental to your application :)

My favorite character is difficult to decide on. I really love Amethyst because my natural reaction to disaster is a poorly timed joke. I also really like Greg because his outlook on life is amazing. Visually, I'm in love with the mysterious pink haired human woman that Pearl gets a crush on. OMG WHO IS SHE? I want to get to know her. Connie is everything I wish I could be intellectually and BONUS she still gets to act like a child.

This is not to say that I don't like the other characters. I could write for pages about why and how much I love almost very character in Steven Universe.

My favorite episode (right now) is Mr Greg. ALL OF THE SONGS and some closure on Pearl and Greg just pulls at every heart string. Pearl's song is tremendous on the emotions and is sung with such passion that I end up crying EVERY SINGLE TIME

According to @Bethany, tickets do not go on sale until Jan 9th.

Guardian emails will be sent out before then :)

Going to get a little deep on this, but I really like "Auto Erotic Assimilation". I'm trying to go spoiler-free here:  We see more of Beth and Jerry's very real relationship problems - Rick makes it with entire collective (including a giraffe) and that brings around consequences that you don't really see coming - Summer (who continues to become a more fascinating character than just the stereotypical teenager) calling out Unity on how its assimilation is morally reprehensible, but the reveal of Unity's pure motive is pretty neat. babble babble babble I could go on for pages...

And THAT ENDING, THO.  The post credits scene is good, too :)

We believe that everybody has to start somewhere, so we accept all skill levels. The most important thing to keep in mind is that we have over a thousand applications to choose from. Even the most experienced applicants might not get picked because we simply have too many applications.

There is no confirmation email. I am currently out of town til Thursday night. I will check then. If your app did not go thru, I will reopen the link for you :)

Totally fair question. Dazzle me with your experience (you can list that in preference qualifications and in the why you want to be a Guardian section). Jokes get old after the 400th application. Make it easier on me (and a hell of a lot more beneficial for you) by showing me your passion and why you would make a great Guardian <3

Hello! Thank you for reaching out to me!  ^_^

Applications will be open for month (closing on November 14th at 11:59pm CST)

After applications are closed, I will be reading (and rereading) all of the entries. I will also be communicating with my Team Leads and the RTX Events staff about who to choose. This process can take up to 2 months (being unemployed, I have to work around everyone else's schedule)

No, y'all can't hope for any earlier than December. I will have the final count/acceptance list before RTX tickets go on sale.

    Thanks!

Any and all teams can be beneficial for EMS skills. :) Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, so EMS skilled folk don't really have a central team. Unless absolutely necessary, Guardians don't led too much of a hand in those situations. We call the venue's emergency team/onsite paramedics to handle those situations. It mostly boils down to your other skills and how you desire to help. :) Let me know if that does not make sense or if you have more questons. Thanks!

Per the journal post update (link):  PAs are not listed as a preference on the application simply because we receive 500+ requests each year for those positions. We will be picking PAs based on how you apply (your reasons for wanting to be a Guardian, past PA work for RTX and other shows, and your preference qualifications)

Check the Guardian group. There is a news post from a week or 2 ago that mentions the deadline :)

DO YOU KNOW THE MUFFIN MAN?!

    | Asked by: Royplayer89 1 year ago

I HAVE INTIMATE RELATIONS WITH THE DONUT MAN

Keep your eye on RTXEvent.com and the RTX twitter account for up-to-date RTX news ^_^

It all depends on what you want to experience at the convention. Going to a convention alone means that you get to focus on your schedule and allows you to go at your own pace (within the confines of the events schedules, of course!) Going to a convention alone doesn't mean that you won't go to community sponsored events or keep you from meeting people while waiting in lines ^_^

If the answer to this is not on the RTXEvent.com website, then we don't ahve the information yet. Most likely won't have a date and time until closer tot he show ^_^

That is an excellent question! I don't have the official answer, but my gut says that there will be an artist alley for 2016. Be sure to stay tuned to RTX news!

Oh, hell. I came into WoW at the release of Burning Crusade! *LOL*

I liked that you actually had to READ the quest text to figure out where to go. Leveling was slower so you felt a little more vested in your character. "Vanilla" WoW isn't better or worse than what WoW is today. Just different. And I agree with a lot of folks who say that the best thing about "vanilla" WoW was the joy and wonder of experiencing the game as a beginner. Everyone was a beginner. My favorite thing in the world was running Karazan. I still do it...as a level 100...solo just for old times sake!

I adore WoW in all of its various forms (Except Cataclysm. But that is another rant for another day!). I don't play as often as I'd like, but I still love it. I've had my mage since I started. She was a blood elf...then a worgen and is now a panda. I play both alliance and horde (my heart belongs to horde) and there is still so much of the game I haven't experienced!

Sorry, yo. I cannot give travel advice other than this: Do what your budget allows. :)

    DO YOU LIKE TOAST, TOO?!

    | Asked by: Royplayer89 1 year ago

I LIKE MY TOAST LIKE I LIKE MY LOVERS - RYE AND COVERED IN MELTED BUTTER

    Disneyland.

My favorite community at my favorite place in the world would be absolutely wonderful <3 Ride all the rides, take all the photos...get a little drunk at Trader Sams or Downtown Disney ;)

I love the idea of the RT Community sticking an RT flag at the top of the Matterhorn! Ok, nto gonna happen, but we'd be a fun crew to get stuck on a ride with!

If you changed your username between applying for and being accepted as a Guardian, YOU MUST MESSAGE ME ASAP. When messaging me, please include your old username so I can find you on the roster.

The Guardian roster is housed outside of the RT website. You may not have been able to access the acceptance link because we could not find your username. When you change your username, I have ABSOLUTELY NO WAY OF KNOWING UNLESS YOU TELL ME. I then have to go and manually change the roster. it doesn't take a horrendous amount of time, but I'd rather be focusing on team assignments and training documents.

Please, please, PLEASE do not change your username until after RTX - or, at the very least - Come and speak with me first.

    Thank you. <3

I have NO idea. I was never this popular in high school or college *LOL*

    Thank you <3

I surround myself with excellent people and learn from them. I am empathetic, optimistic, and try to react with a delicate balance of logic and emotion. I celebrate the good stuff and give myself ample time to deal with the bad. I try to be super nice to everyone :)

That would be a question for Rooster Teeth! ;)

Although getting hired is never my goal, it would be pretty awesome to be considered. I do my thing because I love the community and support the company <3

Usually PAX Enforcers applications are located on the PAX site closer to the events. I've never been a PAX Enforcer, but anyone out there wanna give some info on this?

This is a hard question! If it wasn't for Emerald City Comic Con, I would not be where I am today. I learned everything I know I about convention volunteering from ECCC. I made life long friends, met some of my childhood heroes, and did things that I never knew I could do!

BUT my favorite event for content is PAX Prime. I love games (be it board, card, or electronic pretty moving pixels) and I love trying out new things! Meeting game devs and listening to them passionately talk about their projects is inspiring <3

    I have to say DOOM.

My uncle Rob brought the game to our house and installed it on my family's first high-end computer (that didn't have a black and green screen!)

He taught me how to use DOS, showed me how to play the game, taught me all of the cheat codes, and even showed me how to install the .wad files to turn all of the monsters into Barney the Dinosaur and Beavis & Butthead! DOOM was gory and cool and action packed! I was too scared to watch horror movies or read scary stories...but DOOM made me feel brave. I'd see the scary thing sand SHOOT THEM IN THE FACE. And the best was the fact that my parents were fine with it. They knew my brother and I would never turn violent because of a video game. They'd even watch us play! DOOM was my gateway...and Super Nintendo was my Yellow Brick Road ;)

I wrote a journal post about this the day the emails went out:

If you have NOT received an email:

    * Check your spam filters - The email will be from Rooster Teeth

    * Give it 24 hours - mass email is not always instant.

    * If you still don't have an email by tomorrow afternoon - please message me here on RT so I can figure that mystery out

If your spam filter does not have an email from RoosterTeeth.com, then send me a private message here on RT. :)

I hear the "rule of thumb" for booking a flight is 60 to 90 days before the event. I'd wait on hotels to see if RTX has any deals. But it really all depends on your situation (what hotel you want, are you staying during the 4th of July holiday, your trio budget).

Typically, no. Shoes are required in most event venues. Not only is this a hygiene issue, it is also a safety/injury prevention issue. This is not something that Guardians will enforce, but the venue staff will ask you to put shoes on. There are some great tutorials online for invisible shoes and/or intigrating shoes with socks for cosplay. I highly suggesting searching for those ^_^
