    • A New Year

      MauriceV

2017 has begun and like every year, I say that I dont have new years resolutions to people that ask me about it, while I actually do have them. I failed to meet all of the resolutions I had for 2016, with one exception. A few of the resolutions I set out for myself in 2016 were getting 100% of the achievement from Halo: MCC, lowering down my beer purchases, get a job, move around a bit more and be more healthy all around.

Many things have happened. Goals were achieved, we lost lots of celebrities way too early and sadly way too many idiots were shooting up places. I don't want to focus on the sad things that happened though because, aside from all the shitty things that have happened, there were also lots of positive things to highlight. Like RT Radio for example. We started out after the chat's absence not being sure if we would recover. It's been a slow process but we are getting there partly made possible by @Ginman and @dizzyblinker and I cant thank them enough for all the effort they've put in to help with RT Radio and get it back on its feet.

As for the resolutions though, I've only made one happen. One of the things I had in mind was lowering my beer purchases, which I failled. Eventhough it shows improvement I think that the main reason I failed this one is because of my inability to cope with some issues (such as stress and being depressed) from time to time. I've only really been drinking on the weekends (with a few exceptions), counting fridays and saturdays, but its always been to the point of being drunk.

I already talked about this around June I believe but I actually got a job, which was one of my resolutions. It didnt even happen in the traditional way. Back in march, I got a call from a company that I used to intern for. They asked if I was still searching for a job and that if I wasn't, I could come in and discuss a few things. I've now been working there for almost a year and I really like it. Being stuck at home for months on end gets kinda old.

Another one was getting all the achievements in a few games (mainly Halo: MCC). It's still not looking good with that one. I've only earned a few achievements in that game since the start of 2016. I'm still planning on doing that but it goes on the list of resolutions for 2017.

Speaking of which, these are my goals for 2017:

      - Lowering down my beer purchases

      - Getting 100% of the achievements in 10-15 games

      - Get atleast 365 achievements (averaging 1 per day)

      - Overall taking better care of myself

      - Staying atleast 250 days sober

      - Keeping my job (Contract ends in 3.5 months)

If you made it this far I want to thank you for reading this complete mess of a journal. I hope the holidays were awesome for everyone! Here's to a great 2017!

I don't know what to write for today's community day journal to be honest. Everything is going really well at the moment. My two weeks off started today so I had the time to go out and do some fun stuff.

Actually, I want to touch on another subject for a bit. A few days ago I reposted Joe's journal about the state of RT Radio. He did a really great job of explaining what was going on and how he felt about some things. I couldn't have done it better so I reposted his journal and posted a comment. The support that we've gotten so far is absolutely amazing and I want to thank everyone that joined us for our friday show. It was amazing!

My day wasn't particularly interesting but I hope your community day was amazing!

    • What's Going On With RT Radio

      MauriceV

Note: Hey guys, last night @Ginman posted a journal regarding the whole situation around RT Radio. RT Radio is something really close to my heart and I really wanted to write my own journal about it. But since Joe wrote everything down pretty much exactly as I wanted to, I thought it might be best to read his Journal, which I included below. If you want to read the comments on the original journal, you can do so here.

If you're reading this, be warned, I'm quite angry and upset.

In October of 2013, @Caiti started a little thing call RT Radio. I was there at the start. I made some great friends. I started to get involved with running it and took over running the group. It was great fun, every Friday I chat for a few hours with friends and listen to music. We got staff involved, we got the community involved, it was open, it was friendly and I love it.

Notice, all that is in the past tense.

In July 2015, RT Radio was in running for an hour on Thursdays, 4 hours on Fridays and was in the middle of a charity month. That's when the old site got turned off and we started using the current version. RT Radio used the sponsor chat module to run, we expected to continue when the switchover happened. We then found out that chat would not be ready for launch. So we assumed it would be a few weeks and it would be ready and we'd be back going again. It wasn't a few weeks. It was 6 months. We couldn't even advertise the fact that we weren't around because of the need to re-follow groups to get notifications. And that feature didn't come in for a while.

So 6 months on and we try and get things going again. It's been a very hard 8 months. We haven't got a numbers back, we've had to take time out of the show, people were coming up to me at RTX saying 'what happened to RT Radio?' and 'RT Radio is still going?! I had no idea!'.

You may be saying 'Joe have you really tried?' Yes. I have. Not just me. @MauriceV is there every week backing me up. Some may ask what happened to staff involvement and community DJs. It's a good question and the answer is very simple. Autoplay. Maurice and I have to type an autoplay code into each track embedded into the RT Radio chat. It's not ideal. Worse than that, it's crap. When we first came back and let the RT dev team know about this they promised we'd get the function soon. That was 8 months ago. We held off getting guests in because we didn't want to make them type in the extra code because it complicates everything. We didn't want things going wrong for guests, so we didn't bring them back. 'But Joe, have you been trying to get the word out?' I've written journals, we've got a twitter that advertises every show and every playlist, the group does the same, we try to spread the word, but we haven't been able to gain any traction. What it boils down to is that we're currently lucky to get 10 people in for shows. We used to get 20 plus for a normal show.

So what the hell should we do? I wish I could say I'm still as motivated as before, I can't. I'm not enjoying it nearly as much as I used to. I used to love spending my time chatting to people in the group and listening to music, but the chat is so quiet that there isn't much chat. It makes me upset and angry every Thursday and Friday. I used to be awake all night on Fridays because I'd come off RT Radio buzzing. Now I'm awake because I'm angry and upset.

We've been promised so many times that the chat module will improve, we'll get autoplay, it won't look odd when GIFs and pictures are posted and we wouldn't have to deal with it just crashing on occasion. But we continue to be let down.

The question now is, how long can we continue? It's coming to the point that the group is on serious life support. Yeah ok, we had a good run. Not many groups stay active for this long, but I don't want to hear that. I don't want to end the group. I want it to get back to it's best. If that means me stepping aside and letting someone else run it then so be it. At the end of the day the group was a great place for community members to meet new people. Some had there first real interactions with other community members in RT Radio chat.

So where do we go from here? You tell me. I'm too close to tears after writing all this to know what to do.

    • New Years Resolutions

      MauriceV

It's community day again and since I was busy last month, I figured I'd write something this time. Believe it or not, we are already halfway through 2016. Many things have happened. Goals were achieved, we lost lots of celebrities and sadly way too many idiots were shooting up places. I don't want to focus on the sad things that happened though because, aside from all the shitty things that have happened, there were also lots of positive things to highlight. One of those things actually came from the death of David Bowie. As sad as everyone was about his passing, it was great to see so many people joining RT Radio the week of his passing to have a chat while listening to his music. Speaking of RT Radio, we also had a special show for international community day where different groups from all over the world submitted some really awesome music.

And since we're already halfway through the year, I thought it might be a good time to look back and see how I'm doing with my new years resolutions. Now I didnt have huge ones this year since, like most people, I wasn't expecting them to actually work out. So, to keep things a bit more easy and light hearted, here are some that I had in mind:

Lowering my beer purchases. Initially I planned on only drinking on special occasions but that didnt hold up for long. That doesnt have to be a bad thing though since along with lowering those purchases, I said to myself that being sober for at least 250 days is fine too. At the time of writing this its going well. I've only really been drinking on the weekends and on a few special occasions, like birthdays. Coming to think of it, this resolution stemmed from me wanting to be more healthy in general. Now I'm not the person that goes to the gym so I had to find other ways to keep me moving. I take the dog for a walk way more often (previously someone here at home would do that most of the time) and I walk or ride the bike almost everywhere I go.

The second one was getting a job. Did I manage that? Yes, actually! The first two months of 2016 didn't go well. I only got one reply and it was a rejection. Now, in march, I got a call from a company that I used to intern for. They asked if I was still searching for a job and that if I wasn't, I could come in and discuss a few things. The first 'trial' period was three months and after that we would see and look what the next step would be. That three month period ended yesterday and I'm happy to say that they extended my contract! Feels good to be more active again and have some money actually flowing in as opposed to only spending it.

The third one was getting all the achievements in a few games. That list included The Master Chief Collection. It's not looking good with that one. I've only earned a few achievements in that game since the start of this year. Of course, I'm still planning on completing it but if I want to be able to do that, and I counted it, I'd have to average about 19 achievements a week starting next week, given that there are 600 achievements. And I'm not even thinking about how big of a nightmare some of those are to get. Aside from that immense task I also wanted to 100% atleast 10-15 games (the list I mentioned). So far I've completed Rainbow Six: Siege and Battlefield Hardline (Not including DLC for that one). So as you can see, I still have a lot of work to do but i'm on the right path.

Aside from reflecting on the past six months and just working, I had a pretty chill day. Hope yours went as well as mine did!

I'm a bit late with this journal but hey. Community day went a bit slower than normal but I had fun hosting our weekly RT Radio show. I couldn't finish my set though due to unforeseen circumstances. Achievement hunting in Rainbow Six Siege didnt go as planned either. Apparently stun grenades don't work :)

Aside from me having a slow day, I want to let you all know that we had a special show over at RT Radio on International Community Day. We had different groups submit a set of music of 20 minutes each. It was awesome to see what different kinds of groups around the world like to listen to. The special playlists can be found on Spotify and YouTube.

While my day wasn't that spectacular, I hope yours was. Cheers!

    • Making Progress on Community Day

      MauriceV

On monday I was actually supposed to turn up for my first day of work but I had to call in sick. I know it, the timing was really bad, especially if you know that I only started getting sick... the day before. But I did get better the next day so I went to work for the first 'official' day today. I saw some familiar faces due to me being an intern there a year ago. It was nice catching up with 'old' colleagues.

At one point, I even thought I recognized someone that I havnt seen there before and I havnt talked to him yet at this point either. About half an hour later I noticed that there was a new post on the internal news page saying he was a new intern and also started today. Reading his name I remembered that I went to elementary school with the guy. Don't know why and maybe its because I havn't talked to him in years but to me this felt kinda crazy.

So aside from getting everything ready at work, I didnt really do too much today. It was actually a lovely day. Hope Community Day went as well for you all as it went for me today!

    • The Oscars are racist?!

      MauriceV

I actually wrote this a few weeks ago but since I'm seeing the same bullshit articles now that the Oscars are today, I decided to post it anyway.

Now before I say anything I want say that I dont really follow the Oscars and never really followed them. I do care in the sense that I'll look at the winners and nominations list once but I'm not actively reading articles about it. So even though I don't really care about the show itself, the recent 'racist' bullshit that is happening made me angry and made me want to say something.

For the ones that dont know what is going on, basically whats happening is that a bunch of big name people are trying to boycot the Oscars because there is no non-white actor or director that is nominated for an Oscar this year. It is the second time this happened but you would think that this wouldnt be an issue. From what I can tell (and correct me if i'm wrong), it started with Will Smith's wife (Jada Smith) calling it racist and wanted more diversity. But hey, what a coicidence that she said that after her husband didnt get a nomination for his movie 'Concussion'. Have you seen the movie or a trailer? The movie wasnt great and Will didnt do a great job either.

But those two are still so entitled that they can whine and complain because no excellent movies featuring a black leading actor were made in time for this years Oscars, so no black actor is nominated. Somehow they personally feel marginalized for being black. I fucking hate crybabies like them. Aside from this I think Its something from the last two years that people feel the need to be PC all the time and get offended by everything, its bullshit if you ask me.

Why cry about racism while, and you have to be honest, when there were no really great black actors or directors in the last year. An award should be given based on your skill and role, not because of your freaking skin color. The second problem that we are having with this is the call for diversity. What the hell man?

What gets me is now since there is such an uproar about this, next year the Oscars are going to have to feel obligated to nominate a black actor (even if he or she doesn't deserve it) over a more deserving non black actor just to avoid this same shit. The head of the Oscars already said that they are going to change things and that they want to significantly increase the amount of nominations for 'people of color'. This is fucking bullshit and it makes me angry, how stupid can people be.

A few things that are changing in the upcoming years:

      • They're going to double the number of women and diverse members by 2020.
      • Members who haven't worked for 10 years, achieved lifetime membership or have been nominated for an Oscar lose voting rights.
      • New members' rights last 10 years before renewal, and must work in the last 10 years. After 3 terms they get lifetime membership.
      • Launching their own campaign to find new diverse members, moving away from the old nomination process.

So its not all bad but it doesnt stop with black actors. I think its weird that they also want to double the amount of female members. Dont get me wrong, for all I care the whole team and nominees are female or black. I just think that doing all this crap for the sake of diversity is stupid. And again, for the actors and directors, you should be nominated for your skill and role, not because of your skin color of gender. There just wasnt a black actor that was particularly better than this years nominees.

Some people even urged Chris Rock to pull out as a host. People like this are making Chris Rock's job very easy this year. These jokes are all writing themselves. These people asking Rock to quit, they're mad about a lack of representation. And now by asking him to quit, they're advocating for even less representation. And it doesnt stop there, I think that if it was just Jada Smith that would whine about this, it wouldnt be such a problem but like I said earlier, some big names are supporting the call for diversity (Matt Daemon for example) while it looks like they do it to get bonus points. It's stupid, black people have been nominated numerous times and now its a problem? Denzel has 2 Oscars. Freeman has been nominated like 4 times. I dont see people complaining about the BET Awards...

Luckily, a lot of people are seeing how hypocritical and stupid this nonsense is. Take a look at my boi Ice Cube, I think that some things that he said about it all is how most of the actors should look at all of this. Here is what he had to say when interviewed on the Graham Norton show:

"We don’t do movies for the industry,” he continued, gesturing at Hart beside him. “We do movies for the fans, for the people. And the industry, if they give you a trophy or not or pat you on the back or not, it’s nice but it’s not something you should dwell on.”

“We got accolades from all levels, from our core fans, from our curious fans, from people that didn’t even think they wanted to see that movie,” Cube continued. “We got so much praise for the movie. So how could we be mad that one other Academy or guild or anybody didn’t say it’s their number one?”

“It’s like crying about not having enough icing on your cake,” he added. “You know what I mean? It’s just ridiculous.”

I'd wish that more people would like at it like this. While getting an award is nice it shouldn't be that important. Especially crying for racism and going on about a certain part of the nominees being black is ridiculous. You should get an award based on skill and your role, nothing else.

Setting a quota is not about equality. It's racist on itself. There are talented black actors but none were that great this year.

    • Community And Milestones

      MauriceV

This community day is partially filled with frustration due to things not working out on my end but but I still want to touch on some (recent) milestones that were met (not personal). As many of you may know, ScrewAttack reached it's 10th anniversary today. I remember discovering them back in 2006 when they started showing AVGN. Even though I have to admit that I didnt keep up with them as much the last few years, I think its still awesome that they've made it this far, especially if you know that the site that they used to host their videos on, GameTrailers, shut down on february 8.

Aside from that, the RT Radio group aso reached a milestone on friday. That day the group hosted it's 100th friday show. It's been a fun but long ride (especially with our 6 month hiatus due to site changes). I want to thank everyone who was (and still is) a part of the group for the last 2 years. I truly was great!

I also watched the season finale of RWBY and damn... Things went from 0-11 real damn quick those last few episodes. Killed 3 main characters and permanently injured and given depression to 1 and implied the death of 2 though bringing one back quickly. It's like they're going the same route as GoT.

I hope this community day went as well for you guys as it went for me!
