    Hey everyone!

I'll be in Austin next week and we're doing a special meetup on October 18th at Paco's Tacos!  We'll be meeting up there around 5:30/6pm that evening, eating tacos and meeting each other.  I'll hopefully be joined by others from RT.  It should be fun, you should come!

    Jon The Risemonger

We had some fun last week and I suggest we do it again this week. It's for our health.

    • Finish the sentence: How to...?
    • Feel free to submit more than one idea.

    • Submit the opening line to a short story that guests can complete as a team
    • Ex: One day, a small boy was walking in the woods and happened upon a magic talking rock...
    • Keep the prompt short but details will make it better

    • Come up with a 2 person scenario where the characters interact with each other a lot.
    • Be as descriptive as you want, this is a scene the guests have to play out.
    • Scenes that work best for this game have a high potential for rapid dialogue and confrontation.

BONUS GAME: COME AGAIN? You give me a prompt for a scene and I make them act it out. This week I'm looking for prompts involving:

    • Bad times at boot camp.
    • School dance shenanigans.
    • That one mystery Sherlock had a serious problem with.

Last night was kind of a boring watching night.

First I watched 3 of the Roseanne Halloween episodes, which have always been some of my favorite :)

Then, I tried to watch Tales of Halloween, which I thought I remembered enjoying last year, but this year it just wasn't clicking so I only made it about 30 minutes.

Then I watched the Halloween episode of Chopped.

Then I watched another episode of Stranger Things.

What to watch tonight .... maybe something classic.  Like Halloween, or perhaps House of 1000 Corpses

Up for tonight? A new episode of American Horror Story which I think is reasonably good this year.  Then, another movie which I haven't decided yet and more Stranger Things!

    Woohoo Halloween!

  • Alien Isolation Re-Uploaded and 2Spooky October

    Hey guys,

As Miles already pointed out on Twitter, all episodes of Sponsor Play: Alien Isolation have been re-uploaded! That means you can once again watch them in HD or  maybe see them for the first time since the low quality bug may have been what was keeping you from watching. What's more exciting is that the episodes now have a new place to live but more about that later. First a little explanation about why it took so long to fix and the motivation for moving and re-uploading the episodes.

Every time a question is posted here or on Reddit about what to watch as a new FIRST member I always see a lot of suggestions for Sponsor Play: Alien Isolation. In those same comment threads I would also see a lot of responses to that suggestion and they were almost always about two things, how hard the episodes were to find on the site and how none of them were playing in HD anymore.

The low quality playback was a glitch caused by switching video players/hosts and was something I knew about for awhile. During the video host migration only a very low quality file was grabbed for some reason. I eventually figured out the only solution for this was to just re-upload the episodes with old exports but there was a problem. The location of the old exports had become fragmented over the years. Worse still was that I later found out a few exports were gone completely so that meant a totally new export had to be made. Now I had to find all of the exports AND project files across a few years of office moves, server changes, computer upgrades and backup drives. The biggest hurdle to all of this was the same hurdle that caused all of the files to become fragmented in the first place, time. However after a lot of searching and file
consolidating I was finally able to go back through and re-export the missing episodes of Alien Isolation. I handed everything off to our Programming Director, Melissa and she got everything re-uploaded last Friday so it will now play in HD rather than the low quality versions that were there. The re-upload also gave me a chance to address how hard it is to find the Alien Isolation episodes on the site.

All episodes of the Alien Isolation let's play Miles and I did for Sponsor Play can now be found under the Backwardz Comatible show tab! Just scroll down and click on "Episodes" and under that all episodes are sorted by year. You should find them under 2014 and 2015. Hopefully this makes it easier for new FIRST members to watch these for the FIRST time and for old members to re-watch them as much as they want.

Finally a little bit about the plans for Backwardz Compatible in October. There were a lot of great game suggestions in the comments on the last episode and I thought it would be a shame to just pick one. So for the month of October there will be a different spooky game each week. Obviously Alien Isolation is one of them since we did it last year but as for the rest you will just have to wait and see.

    Enjoy everyone.

I am not sorry for the pun.

  • RT Store Redesign

    Hi everyone,

I’d like to introduce myself and tell you about some new and exciting changes in the RT Store. I joined the RT Store team a little over a year ago as the Senior eCommerce Manager. I focus on strategic initiatives to improve your overall shopping experience, among other fun projects. Over the last year, we’ve been identifying ways to enhance your shopping experience. Through this, we discovered that you like to shop by show/brand.

This morning, we made some big changes to the RT Store. The new store homepage features large brand images so you can quickly jump to the collection you’re most interested in. In addition to the new homepage layout, we’ve updated the navigation to allow you to quickly navigate by product type/category. From there, you can filter by Gender, Collection, Color, Size, and more by using the toolbar on the left, or by product type by using the toolbar below the header. Additionally, we’ve improved the mobile shopping experience so you can browse the store easier and checkout faster.

This update is the first of many. Joel (@DynamicFall), our Store Software Engineer, and I will continue to improve site functionality, imagery, and merchandising to enhance your overall shopping experience. We hope you love the new store site. Please take a look and leave us some feedback in the comments.

I don't know if you noticed but we're back with a brand new season of OTS and this season we are all about being family-friendly and completely accessible to the entire public. In other words, we're gonna just have to get really creative for synonyms and nicknames for dicks ands farts. Gimme some prompts, my lovelies!

    • Come up with a category for the guests to list off possible answers for (i.e. Things not to say after someone says "I love you" for the first time.)
    • Category with a lot of possibilities for answers are the best.

    • Find an odd story from the recent news with an equally odd headline that we can remove a word or two from for the the guests to fill in the blank.
    • Look for headlines where a blank space would leave the story open to a lot of different interpretations. Ambiguity is key.

    • I need a simple feud you'd like to see our guests resolve in a courtroom.
    • Specifically disputes between 2 individuals where one has wronged the other in some way.
    • You can even make this personal and we'll solve your own problems while we're at it.

    • Submit the opening line to a short story that guests can complete as a team
    • Ex: One day, a small boy was walking in the woods and happened upon a magic talking rock...
    • Keep the prompt short but details will make it better

Be good to each other this week and set your clocks for Wednesday, 5PM CT for some goofs, gaffs and guffaws. xoxo The Risemonger

  • We're making a RWBY board game!

Today is a big day here at Rooster Teeth! We just launched a crowdfunding campaign for a new board game we can’t wait to make. It’s called RWBY: Combat Ready, and it puts you and your friends inside the fiercest battles from our award-winning animated series RWBY.

You might be wondering why we’re launching this on Kickstarter. The main reason is that we want our community to have a say in how this game takes shape. Physical board games are a new frontier for Rooster Teeth, and we need as much of your advice, input, and support as possible. Our community made our first movie better, you made our first party game better, and now we need your help to make our first board game the best game it can possibly be!

By contributing, you’ll enable us to use higher quality materials, develop new characters, incorporate new objectives, and maybe even work in a few wish-list features. (Stretch goals, anyone?) Crowdfunding gives us the opportunity to be bolder and more innovative. It gives you the power to help us make a better game!

What’s more, the board game community on Kickstarter is huge! What better place to go to get the feedback we need? We really want this to be a game that’s equally fun to play whether you are a die-hard fan of RWBY, or someone who just loves playing a new well-designed board game with your friends and family.

To make sure we’re getting it right, we’ve partnered with the experts at Arcane Wonders. With their history of making great board game experiences, and our love of gaming and all things RWBY, we can’t wait to show you how amazing this game is going to be! But to really have it all come together, we need your support. Thanks for being the best community on earth. We look forward to making this new vision a reality with all of you!

    Greetings Y’all!

Allow me to make a long overdue introduction. Earlier this year I joined the Rooster Teeth team as Product Designer UX/UI. Basically, it’s been my job to completely redesign our desktop, mobile, and 10 foot experiences. It’s a tall order, but it’s also a dream job to design cool stuff for such a rad and passionate fanbase.

I’m very excited to announce that a brand new Rooster Teeth web experience is less than one month away, and we need your help to make it great! This October we will be sending out a limited number of invites to test our beta release. Just click this link to sign up, and check out a sneak preview of the new site. We’ll reserve your place in line and email you when a spot opens up.

I’ll be checking in with you all on a regular basis to gather your feedback. Stay tuned for updates!

  • Decision making on voting

kickme444 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold RT Community

Yesterday I posted a call for a discussion about the future of voting over here.

It turned out to be a really great discussion and I really appreciate the time everyone took to think and respond thoughtfully.  I have read, and will continue to read, all of the responses.

I wanted to talk a bit about my thought process here because it’s going to be important for everyone to understand as we start to build a new platform.

    The Landscape

Decision making when building a product is pretty hard.  You have to decide what features to build and when to build them.  This decision making is even harder when you’re building a platform for an existing community that is passionate about the product.  To understand this, take a few minutes and read the responses on the post I made yesterday.  Everyone who responded cares about what we are building and there are many different opinions.  This brings me to one of the most important part of the decision making process — prioritizing.

Prioritizing is crucial and often not done well when building a product.  It’s especially important, and hard, when you have an existing product (like our community platform) that is not meeting the user’s needs.  My main objective is building something new that meets the community’s needs better than the current platform  and getting it out as soon as possible.  To do this, there are going to be concessions made and I need to do my best to inform you of concessions and tradeoffs and future vision.  Which brings me back to voting.

If you read the responses to my post there is one thing that is clear: There is no one consensus.  However, I do think there are a two main points that I have summarized, and the order is important.

    1. Simple voting is crucial.  Nearly everyone seems to agree with this.
    2. Modding is important to the community’s identity.

When I come across a problem like this where it turns out there are actually multiple features that need to be implemented, it tells me that we need to consider the multiple features independently.  Why?  Because ultimately we need to consider a few things:

    1. How important are each of the features to the overall platform
    2. How many hours will it take to implement the features

So, let’s try to answer these questions for voting:

    1. I think voting is a pretty small element in the overall community platform.  Yes, it adds personality, but there are so many more important and basic elements that are needed to help the community that voting gets pushed further down the priority list.
    2. For simple upvoting/downvoting it would take roughly 1 week of design and development work (combined across a number of different people).  This feature is simple to design and apply across web and mobile apps (which I want to make sure we take into account while we are building the new community platform).  The modding feature is much more complicated and I would estimate it would take around 3 weeks of combined design and development.  It is also significantly more complicated to design so that it makes sense and is usable on all platforms.

Given these thoughts, we need to start thinking about prioritization.  3 weeks of development time is non trivial.  3 weeks is a significant amount of time for the platform to wait to be delivered to you all.

    My current thoughts

Given everything above, it is my current suggestion that for version 1 of the new community platform, we consider simplifying and implementing an upvote/downvote system with the understanding that in short order we need to add to this voting system a layer of modding.

I hope this has made sense and sheds some light on the process that I am going through.  Like always, this is a discussion that I want to have and nothing is set in stone.  So please, speak up!

  • Rooster Teeth community, I need help figuring out voting!

kickme444 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold RT Community

    Hello RT community!

I am coming to you with a problem that I’d love to put our heads together on to figure out (something I will do more of in the future).  For a very quick update, I completed user research and now feel I understand what we need to build over the next year.  I’ll begin to expose what I’m thinking as I become more confident in what we’re designing.  While things are progressing quickly, I am running into a few issues that I think are unique to the RT community and I’d like to see if we can come up with a solution together.

The first issue we’ll discuss is voting.  For scope, this will be voting on a post or a comment.

    What I believe we need

I believe very simply we need something that equates to an upvote and a downvote.  While there are issues with voting (abuse mostly), I think voting is a good starting point to making sure that we are able to surface better content.

    The problem

Creating an upvote/downvote system would be easy, and perhaps that’s what we should do (if you think so, please drop a comment saying so).  However, currently on RT there is an interesting system of voting called modding.  Internally it accomplishes the same thing as a simple upvote/downvote however there’s an extra layer on top of the vote that is a label such as cool.  I believe there’s benefits and disadvantages to this system:

    • Gives a different personality to voting which may be unique (and important) to Rooster Teeth
    • Gives a perceived added context for the reader to what the users think of the content (I think this is the intention, but due to implementation I think the actual context is lost)

    • The current system is super clunky, to the point where I think for casual users it’s probably confusing and unusable
    • The real context of the votes is lost due to how we display voting results.  We show a total and I think we show the last label that was used (not completely sure about this)
    • It will take us significantly longer to design and engineer this solution and there will be more overhead in maintaining it

    The solution

My requirements for a solution are that we are able to derive the value of a vote (up or down) and that the system be easy to use and understandable for consumers.  What I’m debating and what confuses the issue is how much personality we want to put on top of the voting.  Do we need to modernize modding?  If we did this, how would it work?  Is it basically something akin to Facebook’s reactions but each reaction results in a vote value?  Then we could create a custom set of vote types (and images) for RT (if this is what you think we should do, please help me out with the vote types both positive and negative).  If we did this it could end up displaying something like this:

I’m still not convinced this is the right approach but want to get the community’s feedback right now.  Maybe you think we should go to a simple upvote/downvote system, or maybe you will come up with something totally new and unique.

Let’s have a conversation about this, or else I’ll just pick what I think is best :)

I've posted an update over here.

  • Sticking the Landing -- Day 5 Season 2 Finale Today!

    Hey guys,

I legitimately can't believe we're here -- LESS THAN THREE HOURS from the season finale of Day 5. As Aaron mentioned a few days ago, it's been over a year since we started laying the foundation for Jake and co's journey.

And we've basically spent that entire time waiting for you to get to this point. So... welcome.

One of the crucial things for us this season was sticking the landing. It's one of our few regrets of season one, to be honest. We spent quite a bit of time debating how many answers to give back then, and ultimately erred on the side of mystery. In retrospect, a few more answers were probably due to go out on a satisfying note. Season one was also very front-loaded with the spectacle and scope (not uncommon for a pilot), and focused mostly on introducing you to the world.

Season two is different. We wanted to tell a very focused story with a very definitive conclusion. If you've seen episode seven, you know there are big revelations that took an entire season to build to... and there's even more to come in the finale. You'll get some answers, but not all (it's not the SERIES finale, after all). There will be tension and bloodshed and maybe a few tears. And hopefully you'll feel the love for craft that hundreds of cast and crew put in to take you on this journey.

Let me know how we did after. See you on the other side.
